Francesca: I’ve just got back from the International Features Conference in the Netherlands. Each year the EBU picks a country and 100 of the most dedicated feature makers in the world descend. The format is this: listen to two docs (=1 hour) then analyse in groups (=35 minutes). Then repeat this 4 times and you get 8 hours of feature listening and 2 and a half hours of hard core discussion. On top of this most of the programmes aren’t in English so you’re sitting with transcripts trying to follow say a Czech piece about dumpster diving.
Despite this and the late nights it was extremely invigorating. The highlights were two wonderful personal stories from Danish Anna Thaulow and Norwegian Marte Solbakken.
Our Night Hackney Podcast was played too and went down a storm, though German veteran Leo Braun did ask me exactly what a podcast is… Slow progress in the elite world of feature-making.
